So what to these four things have in commom, vendors, volunteers, fishing and summer solstice. Seldovia to start with and volunteers. This year the theme for Seldovia’s 4th of July celebration is “Celebrating the Volunteers in our Community”. Without them many of the things that take place on a daily basis would not be in our small town. Let me explain.
Seldovia has a group of very talented artists and entrepreneurs who have come together and decided they wanted to offer more shopping for the visitors and community. So they went to the Seldovia City Council and asked to be able to do the “Seldovia Artists Market” as a street vendor. In order to make this happen and quickly as the summer season is short in Alaska, the Seldovia Planning & Zoning Commission and the Seldovia City Council had to meet and act on this decision. Volunteers fill all these positions. The “Seldovia Artist’s Market” is in full swing.
Today is the “Chinook King Salmon Derby” organized by volunteers, Tim Dillon and Joe Miller. This derby will benefit the Seldovia Volunteer Fire Department. There were over 35 fisherman registered, the dock is buzzing this morning with anticipation, everyone hoping they get the winning fish.
Next Thursday the Seldovia Summer Solstice Music Festival starts. This is a monumental volunteer effort of local residents headed up by Susan Mumma who spends hours of time volunteering to make this festival possible for Seldovia. A must do if you are looking for a great place to get away next weekend. Give us a call there are a few places left in town to stay.
I could go on and on about the acts of kindness and volunteering that happen daily in our community, but I think you get the idea. I am grateful to live in such a place called Seldovia.
